CCCA: The Apex Cannabis Cultural Center / Mireia Ballesté

Mireia Ballesté / ESDAP Catalunya / Campus Deià

The CCCA is a centre where it is possible to speak openly and educationally about the consumption of cannabis, its therapeutic properties, and the consequences and benefits of consumption, the circumstances necessary for a change in culture regarding the use of this plant, which for decades has been criminalized and maligned.

An increasing number of countries are allowing the consumption of cannabis for therapeutic and, in some cases, recreational purposes. In fact, although in Spain its consumption and possession is illegal, some companies in the IBEX 35 stock market index invest both in cannabis and its derivatives as well as seeds for cultivation. The use of cannabis in everyday life is widespread. It can be found in building, cosmetics, food, stationery, fashion, and as a source of fuel.

The CCCA is therefore an open site at which to hold conferences, workshops, film screenings. It has an area for socializing, exchanging experiences, prejudice-free, and is a place to find products of cannabis origin or made with hemp, and a site of research, care and therapy. It is set on a natural plot in a cold, industrial landscape on a hill among main roads and railway tracks. A nineteenth-century building is however suddenly turned into smoke, completely organic shapes with materials that provide nature and warmth, fluidity, peace and quiet, calm, and intimacy.
