The project consists in redesigning part of a historical building and turning it into an Interpretation Centre. The project is sited in “El Toro” Sanctuary, at top of the highest point on Menorca and in the centre of the island.

The main idea is to create a space attached to the “Consell Insular” (Island Council), which will include a private part for working on changing the paradigm of tourism and thus on recovering the island’s intangible assets; and a public part to be used for exhibitions, talks and workshops. Islanders will meanwhile be trained to learn and appreciate genuine Menorca. We are seeking to generate a business-centred site with a family-friendly atmosphere. It will be a venue where people can engage with others and understand that the desired change will only happen with everyone’s will and collaboration. This is essential if we are to emphasise the value of what we have and what differentiates us from others.

Although there are two different areas, the space is intended as a whole and will be unified through design. A continuous structure, outlined with wicker and inspired by the wind, forms the system that crosses each space, subtly giving rise to the project’s different parts. The aim is therefore to use design to show that tradition can also be contemporary and that craftsmanship can be adapted to new situations. We are defined by customs, traditions and culture. It is therefore crucial to uphold them with pride.
