In recent years there has been an increase in the number of people who teach sport. Some of the activities taught depend on the weather and usually require professionals to travel in search of job opportunities. In high mountain areas such as the Vall d’Aran, thousands of seasonal workers arrive every year and their work is affected by a growing problem: a scarcity of available accommodation because of excess tourism and high leases. There are also obstacles regarding functional issues as these types of users are not taken into account.

This project arose from a need to reverse the trend and provide access to accommodation and social adaptation of users, based on an analogy with concept of bird migration and the building of their nests. The proposal involves renovation of a housing block in the main town Vielha. This is destined to become a transitory residence for users, who like birds travel from one place to another according to season. The approach has been to treat private places as something necessary and community places as circumstantial, adapting the area so that rooms become common yet also private areas through the use of a flexibility provided by mobile partitions that close these aspects off and offer a material language to yield connections among residents. All this together yields what is like a large nest, which transforms, fulfils utilitarian requirements, and improves workers’ quality of life.
