There are five hundred Spanish villages with fewer than 50 residents, according to the Spanish Federation of Municipality and Provinces (FEMP). In 14 provinces over 80% of municipalities have no more than 1,000 registered residents. Furthermore, experts state that in 10 years the agriculture and cattle industries will have disappeared in villages with populations of under 100 inhabitants. One of the regions most affected by depopulation is Teruel. It has a population density of 9 inhabitants per km2 which is far lower than Spain’s average of 92 inhabitants per km2.

The main objective of this project is to raise awareness of the issue of depopulation in Spain and show how the towns’ residents suffer directly, by telling their stories and describing their customs and outlooks and also through documentary compilation on the town. The purpose is to create awareness about depopulation and its consequences.

Ibierno is a publication that compiles the cultures of these towns with a view to protecting, preserving and dignifying them. It is also intended as a tribute to town in the first issue: La Hoz de la Vieja. It is also hoped that the magazine also can help to prevent rural culture from disappearing as a result of depopulation. To do this, it compiles all information that exists on the towns subject to depopulation to help the origins of each town remain intact.
