Victims of silence / Georgina Soley

In the coming 20 years, over 40,000 people will die in Spain as a result of contact with asbestos. This figure increases exponentially if people affected in other ways are also taken into consideration.

This, unfortunately, is the most optimistic forecast and that is if immediate measures are taken. Asbestos is a mineral that has been widely used because of its good properties in mass production sectors such as the shipbuilding, construction and textile industries, as well as others. However, it is very harmful to health and is the cause of chronic and deadly diseases for people who have inhaled the fibres. For a long time, Spain was a major producer and exporter of asbestos and it is estimated that there are still over 2.6 millions of tons of asbestos in our cities. We are therefore living alongside a silent hazard.

An information and warning campaign about the presence and danger of asbestos has been created. It invites the public to find information on the web, where they can take part in the creation of data and also download material with which to continue alerting other people. The concept is therefore a guerrilla campaign with which the public can locate the presence of asbestos and raise the alarm about its danger in specific places. The purpose is to inform the public and raise awareness about the hazardous situation to which we are exposed because of the presence of asbestos. This material starts to deteriorate and multiplies the risk up to the point where it becomes a potential epidemic.

Víctimes del silenci (Victims of silence) raises awareness about a hidden problem, which is in the air we are breathing and which is seriously injuring our health. It is a problem that has been silenced and about which this project hopes the public itself will condemn.
